Mauritian gastronomy in 2026: culinary festivals, street food and starred chefs

Mauritius, a new gourmet destination

Long celebrated for its paradise beaches, Mauritius is now asserting its gastronomic identity. In 2026, culinary events are multiplying, attracting food lovers from around the world. Heritage Resorts and Golf has unveiled an ambitious culinary calendar, making gastronomy the central theme of the Mauritian experience throughout the year, with residencies by Michelin-starred chefs such as Éric Canino, Christopher Hache and Pascal Bastian.

Festivals not to be missed

Among the highlights of 2026, the Constance Culinary Festival returns for its 19th edition from 13 to 21 March at the Constance Belle Mare Plage. This event showcases culinary creativity in an exceptional setting. In May, Bourbon Island Week will celebrate Réunion’s culinary heritage, creating a gastronomic bridge between the two sister islands of the Indian Ocean. The Chocolate Festival (15–21 June) and the 5th edition of Sustainable Gastronomy Week (5–11 October) round out a rich and varied programme.

Street food, a popular treasure

In Port Louis, the true gastronomic experience also unfolds on the streets. Dholl puri, a lentil flatbread filled with curry, is the quintessential national dish. It can be enjoyed for a few rupees near the Central Market. Gateaux piment, spiced split-pea fritters, are the favourite Mauritian snack. And to cool down, alouda – sweet iced milk with basil seeds and agar-agar – remains an absolute must. These street flavours embody the island’s unique culinary melting pot.

Cuisine at the crossroads of influences

Mauritian cuisine draws from four great traditions: Indian, Chinese, Creole and French. Mauritian biryani, mine frit (Chinese-style stir-fried noodles), Creole tomato-based rougaille and vindaye of fish marinated in turmeric all bear witness to this richness. The recently revitalised Chinatown restaurants in Port Louis offer authentic Sino-Mauritian cuisine, while luxury hotel fine dining tables boldly reimagine these classics with refinement.

Planning your gourmet stay

To make the most of this culinary buzz, fly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport and reach Port Louis within an hour. Book your festival tables in advance, as places fill up quickly. Sommelier Week, scheduled for August, will showcase food and wine pairings for oenology enthusiasts. Between a street food lunch at the Central Market and a gourmet dinner overlooking the ocean, Mauritius promises an unparalleled taste experience.
